corporate history
Our roots are in the custom homebuilding business. Peter Gilgan, who founded and still runs the company, is renowned throughout the industry for his vision in making communities that have a distinctive look and are organized around the idea that people should have places to gather and play. His striving to make each new home the Best Homeowner Experience has meant many innovations have been introduced into the way the company has been run and organized.
Never reluctant to take up new challenges, Peter was among the first builders in Canada to incorporate elements of modern community planning called 'new urbanism'. Out of this came Mattamy's trademark WideLot™ homes that were first introduced in Burlington in 1996. Today, these designs now account for well over half of all new homes built by Mattamy.
Peter built his first home in 1976 and has never looked back. He went from one home to 400 homes per year by 1994 and from that, the company went through exponential growth. Mattamy Homes has sold in excess of 3,000 new homes annually over the last four years.
Through the years we have been honoured with recognition from the home building industry for both our home designs and community planning. Of the awards we've earned, we are most proud of being named GTHBA Builder of the Year in 2001, having Hawthorne Village in Milton, being named the GTHBA Community of the Year and Ontario homebuilders Project of the Year in 2002. Watercolours in Mississauga was the GTHBA project of the year for 2003.
Most recently we are extremely proud of earning the distinction of "Highest in Customer Satisfaction With New Home Builders in the Greater Toronto Area" in the J. D. Power and Associates 2006 Canadian New-Home Builder Customer Satisfaction Study. Prior to that we also earned the distinction of "Top 3 in Customer Satisfaction With New Home Builders in the Greater Toronto Area" in the J. D. Power and Associates 2005 Canadian New-Home Builder Customer Satisfaction Study.
It is also very important to us as a company to give back to the communities in which we exist. We sponsor many local charities and activities and are particularly involved in family and children's programs.
In order to retain its roots and not lose focus on the customer while at the same time accruing all of the benefits associated with a large company, Mattamy Homes organized into Divisions in 2003. In Canada, Mattamy now operates five divisions, including our newest in Ottawa.
Divisions allow us to stay in touch with the wants and needs of our customers at a local level. It also permits us to establish long-term relationships with local suppliers and trades. At the same time, all divisions have access to the benefits of Mattamy's broader structure and services.
Mattamy Homes has built 80 communities in Southern Ontario. Click to view list of current communities.
We have also recently expanded into the United States with small, exclusive local builders in Minnesota, Florida and North Carolina.
