Community Involvement
The YMCA of Oakville and the Peter Gilgan Family Y are grateful for the support of Mattamy Homes, the Co-Host of the Y's leading annual fundraiser - the Mayor's Invitational Softball Tournament (MIST). From February 15 to March 15, the YMCA of Oakville will join with YMCA's across Ontario in the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign which raises much-needed financial support for children, teens and families who are unable to afford the full cost of participation in a YMCA program or activity in the community. The YMCA is a charity and is committed to improving the lives of children and families in our communities by providing safe places, caring and trained volunteers and staff, and programs that teach life skills.
Please go to www.ymcastrongkids.com and see how you can help the YMCA to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. For more information about the YMCA of Oakville, or the MIST tournament, go to www.ymcaofoakville.com
The very word 'community' comes from the idea of living, working and succeeding together and we like to think we do our part in creating an environment to make sure that's possible for everyone who lives there.
We've found, through the years that it's the little things that have a big and lasting community impact. It's a tree lighting ceremony at Christmas where neighbours gather to celebrate the season, or flowers for planting in spring, or Easter Egg hunts in the community or a summer bbq. We organize these kinds of events in many of our communities.
For Mattamy, building a better quality of life extends beyond the boundaries of our communities. We believe it is our responsibility to get personally involved in worthwhile charitable and community events.
For example, we provide opportunities for our homeowners to make donations, and actively solicit participation from our employees and consultants. In 2000, Mattamy employees and consultants established "The Mattamy Motorcycle Poker Run," which in 2004 raised more than $28,000 for the Milton District Hospital Foundation.
Wellspring Halton-Peel, which opened in 2000, is another example of our corporate involvement. Here, we assumed the role of project manager, which included the design and construction of a home-like facility to serve cancer patients and their families from across the entire region.
One of the principle causes we support, the United Way (who do so much for so many) is one way we, as an organization, give back to the communities we serve.
Mattamy's United Way Campaign is a company-wide effort. In 2002, the employee Campaign raised $33,500, and was awarded Best First Year Campaign. In 2003, the Campaign raised $44,500 and we were recognized as the Outstanding Employee Campaign. CEO Peter Gilgan matches employee donations every year.
In partnership with Milton District High School, in March 2005 Mattamy Homes Halton Division championed an initiative to lend a helping hand to those most affected by Hurricane Ivan in Grenada. Mattamy's contribution included the design of a workable house plan, a significant financial donation, the support of its building trades and suppliers, and the provision of building materials required for the participating students to help construct new homes.
Building on our award-winning Co-op Education high school program, in 2005, in co-operation with George Brown College, Mattamy will introduce a Degree Program that promotes and fosters management jobs within the home building industry.
Mattamy hosts the Annual Mayor's YMCA of Oakville Invitational Softball Tournament. The 2004 Tournament raised over $351,000 for the Y's Capital Campaign.
We are always looking for new ways to get involved because we know that there is always something more that can be done to improve the quality of life in our neighbourhoods and the communities they serve.
